Our Student Ministry Vision & Values

Partnering with Parents and the Church: Ultimately it is parents who are responsible to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord in the context of a local church (Pr. 22:6; Deut. 6:7; Eph. 6:1-4). Breakaway Students exists to partner with parents and the broader church body as a support to parents, students, and families.

Strengthening Theological Foundations: The middle school and high school years are pivotal in terms of establishing and strengthening a theological, spiritual, and moral foundation that students can stand on and build on for the rest of their lives (Pr. 22:6). In light of this, we will focus a large portion of teaching on foundational theology (the Gospel, the Lord’s Prayer, the 10 Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Baptist Catechism), and foundational spiritual disciplines (daily Bible reading, prayer, and singing Psalms and hymns to the Lord). 

Building strong Christian friendships: The Bible teaches that “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise” (Pr. 13:20), and one of the biggest blessings of a Student Ministry is helping teenagers build strong Christian friendships within the church. So in addition to helping build strong theological and spiritual foundations, our Student Ministry is also committed to helping students have fun together and build good friendships with one another as they grow and develop in their faith. This is where game nights, sports events, retreats, etc. fit into the ministry, to create an environment that fosters fun and friendship in the context of wise, godly community and mentorship. 

Growing Students Toward Godly Manhood and Womanhood: The teenage years are a time of transition from childhood to adulthood, where boys start becoming young men and girls start becoming young women. In light of this, it is vital that students have a Biblical vision of godly manhood (1 Sam. 16:18; 1 Cor. 16:13) and womanhood (Pr. 31:10-31; Tit. 2:3-5). Once again, it is first and foremost the responsibility of parents to teach their children what it means to be a man or woman of God, but Breakaway Students aims to support parents in this duty through the example of our volunteer leaders, the teaching of God’s Word on the particular duties of men and women, and the encouragement of the Cardinal Virtues common to both men and women: Prudence, Temperance, Justice, and Courage. 

Cultivating Lives of Mission and Service: Every Christian has a duty to not only know God, but make him known to others—to preach the gospel and make disciples (Matt. 28:18-20), and also to serve others in his name. We want to encourage our students to use their gifts to serve others, to share their faith, to tell their friends about Jesus, to invite their friends to Breakaway Students and to church, and to be equipped to share their testimony and proclaim the gospel. Ultimately we are on a mission to shine the light of Jesus and proclaim the gospel to the whole world, and we want to encourage students in that direction and give them opportunities to grow in it.
